The Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay, chartered by the English Crown in 1629, sat as a General Court, which after the 1630 emigration to America became the government of the Massachusetts Bay colony. Rufus Candage was born in Blue Hill, Maine in 1826, the son of Samuel and Phebe Candage. He went to sea at age eighteen, sailing along the coast of New England and then on voyages to the West Indies and to Europe. He served as master of the brig Equator and the ships Jamestown of New York and Electric Spark and National Eagle, both of Boston. He spent twenty-three years as a sailor, retiring in 1867 to Brookline, Mass. Rufus Candage died in 1912. From the description of Papers, 1808-...
